An attractive, white glazed tray with stainless steel mesh insert for really easy wheatgrass growing without messy compost or plastic trays. 

The glazed ceramic tray is designed for growing your crops hydroponically (with just water and seeds) but you can also remove the inner mesh sieve and grow in compost should you wish to. Because there are no holes in the bottom of the tray your work surfaces stay clean. 

The Wheatgrass and Salad Tray requires very little space. To grow larger quantities multiple trays can be added - stacked one above the other - to increase the growing area without increasing the small footprint on your work surface. This also allows you to grow rotational crops or different types of crop (e.g. wheat grass, barley grass, sunflower or buckwheat sprouts).

The stainless steel mesh insert allows you to grow the seeds hydroponically - just spread the sprouted seeds on the mesh and rinse once a day until the roots grow down into the water. The mesh sieve has two convenient handles to lift it out of the tray so you can rinse the sieve under the tap. The glazed tray will catch the drips after rinsing. Eventually the roots will grow down into the fresh water you pour in daily.

Alternatively remove the mesh and just use the glazed tray with organic compost. There are no drainage holes so compost can't leak out and make a mess on your counter tops.

The Wheatgrass Tray enables you to easily harvest and juice the nutritious roots as well. The roots not only greatly increase the amount of juice, their sweet mellow flavour helps to balance the strong taste of the wheat grass.

After your wheat grass has been harvested, simply slice the roots off the bottom of the mesh with a long knife and the remains of the grass will pull away from the top of the mesh easily.

The mesh is simple to clean with a firm brush and running water (a Tawashi Brush is ideal for this).

Unlike automatic sprouters which can block the flow of air around the base of the wheatgrass increasing the likelihood of mould*, this wheatgrass tray allows air to flow freely around and through the wheatgrass to keep it strong and healthy.

*Mould is a fairly common problem amongst wheatgrass growers. While mould is less likely to be a problem with this kit since it allows for good ventilation, if your grass should develop mould it is not advisable to juice the entire plant (blades, roots and seeds). If the layer of seeds contains any trace of mould, you can just slice the roots off the bottom of the Wheatgrass tray mesh and cut the grass blades above the mould, discarding only the seed layer.  

HANDY TIP: Mould can be prevented by soaking the seeds in 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) before sprouting them to destroy any mould spores that may be on the seeds. You can also spray the layer of seeds and growing grass with 3% food-grade hydrogen peroxide to prevent any airborne mould spores taking hold. The extra oxygen molecule in the H2O2 will be released and kill the spores, leaving only pure H2O - water. **While adding seaweed nutrient to the water is sometimes recommended to supply minerals normally found in soil, not everyone agrees this is necessary. Steve Meyerowitz author of Wheatgrass Nature's Finest Medicine says, "For indoor gardening, wheatgrass is virtually just as potent whether you grow it in soil or in water." A nutritional comparison from lab analysis of two trays grown in the same greenhouse under the same conditions using the same seed, one in composted organic soil, the other just in water showed insignificant or no difference in nutrient levels. According to Mr. John Howell, of the Soil Lab at the University of Massachusetts, the two products are virtually equal: "It appears as though the grass has not begun to get nutrients from the composted soil but is still growing off the initial nutrient base of the seed." 

If you intend to juice the roots as well as the grass, then it is advisable to grow wheatgrass in pure water without seaweed nutrients since it would be difficult to thoroughly wash the seaweed solution off the roots before juicing them.

NOTE: The wheatgrass shown in the photos above was grown only in water with no added nutrients demonstrating how simple it is to grow lush wheatgrass hydroponically.
