HYDRATE AND DETOXIFY YOUR CELLS

As well as good nutrition, we all need fresh clean air to breathe, pure water to drink and uncongested internal organs - beginning with the colon - to avoid becoming overloaded with toxins and to maintain good health.

1. Pure Water

2. Colon Health

PURE WATER

All living things need water to survive. 75% of the human body is composed of water. The brain is 85% water. It is recommended that we drink at least 8 glasses of water a day, but many of us do not. Dr F Batmanghelidj, an internationally renowned researcher, author and advocate of the natural healing power of water says that chronic, unintentional dehydration is the origin of most pain and degenerative diseases in the human body. He says that if you simply drink sufficient water many serious conditions can be cured.

When we are dehydrated, toxic chemical waste builds up in our joints, organs and other body tissues. The toxic area becomes acidic and painful. We can develop arthritis, kidney stones, heartburn, ulcers, allergies, asthma, migraine headaches, and far more serious conditions like cancer. Regularly drinking pure water washes toxic waste into the circulation and then passes it out through the kidneys or other organs.

While drinking more of almost any type of water can help reduce the harmful effects of chronic dehydration, there is some degree of impurity in most types of water, some of it quite hazardous. Make sure you are drinking the cleanest, purest water available.

Distillation is proven to remove these contaminants from water:

  • Arsenic – a poison used especially as an insecticide or weed killer;
  • Benzene – a colourless volatile flammable toxic liquid used as a solvent and as a motor fuel;
  • Iron – a heavy metallic element that readily rusts in moist air. A very common element often present in groundwater. Iron can also give a metallic or distorted flavour to drinks;
  • Lead – a heavy metallic element used especially in pipes, is hazardous to health if breathed or swallowed, can cause brain damage, especially to children;
  • Manganese – a metallic element that resembles iron, sometimes found dissolved in groundwater, usually in combination with iron. It is noticeable because, in concentrations above 0.05 mg/L, it causes black staining of laundry and plumbing fixtures;
  • Mercury – a heavy poisonous metallic element that is liquid at ordinary temperatures, also releasing a toxic vapour;
  • Nitrate – sodium nitrate or potassium nitrate used as fertilisers. A natural nitrogen compound sometimes found in well or surface waters. In high concentrations, nitrates can be harmful to young infants or young livestock;
  • Sodium – an element that occurs abundantly in nature in combined form and is very active chemically. Many sodium compounds are used in the water treatment industry. Most notable is the use of sodium chloride as a regenerant in the water softening process;
  • Viruses – any of a large group of submicroscopic infective agents that are capable of growth and multiplication only in living cells, and that cause various important diseases in humans, lower animals, or plants. Viruses can reproduce only within living cells. They are about 100 times smaller than bacteria.
  • Pharmaceutical drugs – SEE BREAKING NEWS BELOW.

Why is steam distillation the best water purification method?

  • Distillation… is the single-most effective water treatment method! A well-designed distiller will remove 99.9% of contaminants.
  • Distillation… is the only process that boils the water, which means that distillation kills bacteria, viruses and other biological contaminants!!
  • Distillation… is the only process that collects the pure steam! The steam rises from the water, leaving virtually all other contaminants behind, then we cool the steam down into pure water!
  • Distillation… produces extremely consistent results! There is no drop in quality over time. Produces consistently high quality water glass after glass, day after day, and year after year.
  • Distillation… is extremely reliable!! Since there are no physical barriers to break down or fail, a good distiller is very reliable and has a very long lifespan!
  • Distillation… the quality of distilled water is not related to the quality of the source water! Will produce consistent quality regardless of the quality of the source water.
  • Distillation… offers absolute peace of mind! Consistently produces the highest quality drinking water available, something that no other process can honestly claim.
  • Distillation… is recommended by doctors & nutritionists Endorsed by top doctors and nutritionists in books such as the Fit for Life series, Dr Norman Walker's Water Can Undermine Your Health, Water-The Shocking Truth That Can Save Your Life, Optimum Sports Nutrition, Nutrition for Endurance, Prescription for Nutritional Healing and many, many more.
  • Distillation … duplicates Mother Nature’s hydrologic cycle, nature’s primary method of purifying water.

What is distillation?

Distillation most closely matches Nature's Hydrologic Cycle. The Hydrologic Cycle (also called the water cycle) is the process that moves water around the earth. The cycle starts with the sun heating water in our rivers, lakes and oceans and turning it into water vapour, which rises into the air (called evaporation). When water vapour cools it forms clouds (condensation), which become heavy with water and rains back to earth (precipitation).

It is this process that cleans the earth’s water. Water is not created or destroyed. Simply put, it is continually changing location and form. The water we use now is the same supply the human race started with. Its quality is renewed again and again by the natural Hydrologic Cycle.

Distillation is simply the process of heating water to its boiling point, capturing and then condensing the pure steam to form pure distilled water. In effect, the water is removed from the dissolved solids it contained - impurities like aluminium, arsenic, benzene, cadmium,  chlorine, detergents, fluorides, herbicides, lead, mercury, nitrate, oestrogen, pesticides, phosphates, radon, sulphates, inorganic minerals, etc. These impurities are left as residue in the boiling chamber where they are rinsed away.

The TDS (total dissolved solids) that are picked up by water from polluted air, soil and public water systems are measured in PPM (parts per million). The highly contaminated ocean has around 35,000 PPM of TDS. Tap water contains around 300 to 500 PPM. Filtered tap water may be around 170 PPM when a new filter has just been installed, but this figure will rise significantly with use because the filter becomes more and more clogged with impurities, and less efficient at filtering. Bottled water can vary widely from about 100 to 300 PPM. Pure rain water and steam distilled water has 0 PPM of TDS.

Aren’t there minerals missing from distilled water that my body needs?

There is no doubt that the body needs minerals. This issue is perhaps the ‘hottest’ one regarding the use of distilled water. It is easy to find ‘authorities’ or ‘experts’ on both sides of this controversial issue.

In short, virtually all nutritional and medical authorities agree that the body assimilates organic minerals from the daily food cycle. Where the authorities disagree is whether or not the body directly extracts any nutritional value from the inorganic minerals found in  dissolved rocks, dirt, and stone found in tap or mineral waters.

Perhaps the best way to sort out this problem is to evaluate various tap and mineral water sources around the world and determine the amount of inorganic minerals (by weight) which would be consumed by drinking an average of two litres of tap water daily, then compare this number to the amount of minerals (by weight) found in a normal daily diet.

Dr. Jon Kirschmann’s Nutritional Almanac is one of several good sources for this data.

When these two sources of minerals are compared, the results are real eye-openers. On the average, over 95% of the major and trace minerals ingested daily (by weight) come from food (fruits, vegetables, nuts, beans, seeds, dairy products, etc) - and less than 5% from drinking water.

The distilled water ‘mineral issue’ then can be focused into a much clearer question: Is it really wise to ingest all types of heavy metals, bacteria, viruses, pharmaceuticals and even toilet paper that is found in tap water, the chemicals used in water treatment processes, industrial and agricultural chemical residues, etc. simply to get that little additional percentage of daily mineral intake from water sources?

Inorganic Minerals vs Organic Minerals

Dr Norman Walker, one of the world's leading nutritionists, who lived to a healthy, active 99 after drinking distilled water for most of his life, said in his book Water Can Undermine Your Health:

“The minerals contained in Natural water are not of a kind which the cells of the body can use. Consequently they are rejected by the cells and constitute a hazard in the circulatory system. Distilled Water has the ability to collect these UN-usable minerals and pass them as sediment into the kidneys for excretion.”

“People who say that Distilled Water leaches minerals out of the body are, therefore, correct only in this respect. This is only 50% of the truth. It is virtually impossible for Distilled Water to separate minerals which have become an integral part of the cells and tissues of the body. Distilled water collects ONLY the minerals which remain in the body, minerals discarded from natural water AND from the cells, the minerals which the natural water originally collected from its contact with the earth and the rocks. Such minerals, having been rejected by the cells of the body are of no constructive value. On the contrary, they are debris which distilled water is capable of picking up and eliminating from the system.”

Dr Norman Walker also said that we gradually turn ourselves into stone if we drink mineral rich Natural water.

You would have to drink a bathtub full of tap water to get the equivalent minerals available in a glass of carrot juice, but even that much water would only provide the inorganic form of the minerals that the body can't use. The carrot plant itself is able to break down the inorganic minerals in soil and rocks to transform them into a bio-available, easily assimilated organic form. So why aim to consume dirt rather than the plant that grows in it?

What do other experts say?

"Distilled water is always the safest to drink. As regular water may leave deposits of calcium and other unwanted minerals in the blood circulation, these may find their way into the Endocrine Glands system with disastrous results which might never be attributed to these unusable minerals as the cause.” Water Can Undermine Your Health

"The process of distillation kills and removes virtually all bacteria, viruses, heavy metals, and other organic and inorganic contaminants. Once distilled, the water is as pure as water can reasonably be. While it's true that distillation removes minerals as it eliminates various other contaminants from water, I don't feel this is a problem. We get our minerals from food, not water. As far as acidity goes, distilled water is close to a neutral pH and has no effect on the body's acid/base balance. Distilled water is safe to drink, and the kind of water I use myself."

BREAKING NEWS

PHARMACEUTICALS - A cocktail of pharmaceutical drugs – including antibiotics, anti-convulsants and mood stabilizers – is in the public water supply in the USA and the UK.  Up to 100 different drugs have been detected in our water supply, and in reservoirs, lakes and rivers.

While the amounts are very low, scientists are worried that they may still have a detrimental effect.  “These are chemicals that are designed to have very specific effects at very low concentrations.  That’s what pharmaceuticals do.  So when they get out to the environment, it should not be a shock to people that they have effects,” says zoologist John Sumpter at Brunel University in London.

The drugs are getting into the water supply from human waste and from people who are throwing away the drugs unused. Anabolic steroids, which are put into cattle to pump them up, are also getting into our drinking water.

Scientists are concerned that the drugs could be made more toxic by the chlorine that is increasingly being introduced into the public water supply.

A new report in America has discovered that at least 41 million homes throughout the States are regularly drinking water that is laced with a vast cocktail of drugs.  The water supply in 24 metropolitan areas, including Southern California, Northern New Jersey, Detroit and Louisville, has been contaminated.

None of the existing filtration plants has been designed to eliminate drugs, and the same may also go for the standard home filter systems.  Reverse osmosis is the only (filtration) technology that can remove traces of pharmaceuticals, but it is too expensive for water companies to install for large-scale filtration.

(Source:  Associated Press, March 9, 2008).

CHLORINE - Our drinking water has become so toxic that pregnant women who drink it could give birth to a child with serious defects.  A new study has discovered that the water supplied to one in six homes in the UK is so heavily chlorinated that it doubles the risk.

Expectant women who drink the water, swim in it, take a bath or shower in it, or even stand close to a boiling kettle, could double their chances of giving birth to a baby with heart problems, a cleft palate or major brain defects.

Chlorine contains chemicals called trihalomethanes, or THMs, and these increase the risk of holes in the heart, cleft palate and anencephalus, where parts of the brain, skull and scalp fail to fully develop.

Researchers from the University of Birmingham estimate that one in six households in Britain – around 4 million homes – could be supplied with water with dangerously high levels of chlorine.

The latest study is just one of many that have alerted water authorities to the dangers of over-chlorination, but so far none has reduced the levels.

Remember, distillation removes these impurities from your tap water more effectively and consistently than any filtration system.

COLON HEALTH

The human digestive system consists of a long tube extending from the mouth to the rectum. The system digests the solid food and liquid we eat and drink, absorbing the nutrients along the way. What is left of the solid material exits the body via the large intestine and rectum.

Much information has been written on the virtues of a high fibre diet. The purpose of the fibre is to help food to move through the digestive tract rather than getting stuck during transition ~ the fibre acts rather like an intestinal broom! Nutritionists and doctors have advised us on the importance of eating lots of fruit and vegetables. It is these that are the source of living enzymes, vitamins and trace minerals that the body needs ~ especially fruit and vegetables from organic sources. These enzymes and vitamins are the nutrients which the blood normally takes from the food while it is passing through our digestive system. A healthy diet will maintain a healthy digestive system. A healthy digestive system will improve the blood's ability to absorb the nutrients and use them for natural, continuous regeneration of healthy cells.

Much of the absorption of these nutrients takes place in the small intestine and the colon or large intestine. This part of the digestive tract is very long ~ in an adult it can extend some metres in length. One of the features of healthy intestines is the natural, circular, muscular movement whereby the food is actually passed through the system. With diets containing a high proportion of refined, over-processed foods, with high fat and sugar content but containing low fibre, this peristalsis movement becomes weak and ineffective. For many people, problems arise when most food does not pass through the system but gets stuck in the many small pockets along the way and becomes impacted against the wall of the colon. The material then begins to putrify and ferment i.e. the whole internal environment becomes toxic. The colon is meant to serve as a reservoir from which the blood absorbs nutrients to circulate throughout the entire system. When the colon is toxic, or impacted with faecal matter, poisons are distributed instead and the condition of toxemia arises. The affected person is not satisfied by food, feels hungry and eats more than s/he needs, because the nutrients are not absorbed and circulated.

Another function of the colon is to eliminate the waste products which arise from normal body function. It cannot do this if the walls are covered with a toxic lining. The elimination of waste products and undigested food is equally important as the proper digestion and assimilation of food.

The colon is also a natural breeding ground for bacteria. There are 2 types of bacteria - the friendly scavenging bacteria known as bacilli coli which lubricate the colon and are formed by glands in the small intestinal wall, and the unfriendly, pathogenic kind which cause disease. In a healthy colon the bacilli coli will control the unfriendly, disease producing bacteria. When there is too much putrification and fermentation in the colon, the pathogenic bacteria proliferate and illness results such as toxemia. Constipation is often the first symptom to manifest ~ the packed accumulation of faeces in the bowel make it difficult to evacuate the bowel, further complicated by the lack of natural lubrication usually produced by the friendly bacteria.

Regular bowel cleansing will remedy this situation and once the bowels are permitted to resume normal, cleansing activity, a regular maintenance programme is advised. Just as a house requires spring cleaning and a car needs regular servicing, the bowel needs maintenance cleansing, so that toxic wastes do not build up.

Although complete bowel cleansing and maintenance requires herbs, diet, massage and often packs and poultices, enemas are a significant and useful self-help measure which serves an important function in any bowel programme. For many people even the word "enema" conjures memories of childbirth! Complementary therapists have long recommended the taking of a regular enema as part of on-going body maintenance. For some, taking daily enemas forms part of their cancer treatment because of the ability of some types of enema to reach the portal vein thereby enabling the liver to release toxins.

Why should we include enemas in detox programmes?

The most important use of enemas is the service they add to any body purification programme. Whenever any form of fasting or dietary regime releases toxins into the blood and lymph, the enema is the most effective in carrying away toxins out of the body. It is also a necessary part of any programme dedicated to deep bowel cleansing. However, once the goal is achieved, the enema is used only on a maintenance basis, sometimes once a week and sometimes once a month, or whenever signs of impending colds or flu or digestive problems make themselves known. If the need for enemas is too often, you should seek professional guidance, so that you don't weaken the system by overusing the enemas, also avoiding the cause of the congestion or problem.

One of the happy results of a clean colon is a more stable emotional life. It is said amongst natural healers that the constipated person is an irritable, impatient one. If we could only realise consciously the importance of internal hygiene on our general health, well-being and appearance, we would balance all our efforts for external appearance with internal cleanliness. It is certainly an essential aspect of any body-cleansing programme, whether for preventive or curative treatment. Once enemas become an accepted part of your lifestyle and have a place amongst other beauty and health routines, you will be able to apply it when needed for beneficial results. Many people have a resistance towards accepting enemas and we hope that this information will help you to overcome that resistance.

Types of enema kit

There are a number of different types of enema kit. All kits can be used as a douche or as an enema, coming complete with the two different nozzles: one for a rectal enema and one for vaginal douching. There are 3 different types of kits:

  1. the bucket type (about the size of a kitchen measuring jug), e.g. the Büttner Franks
  2. the bag type, e.g. the Artsana
  3. the upside down hot water bottle, e.g. the Dolphin

All the above rely on gravity feed, meaning that the bucket, bag or hot water bottle is designed to be placed on a hook, or a ledge (bucket type) and is placed nearby at approximately shoulder height. A tube of about 5 feet connects the container with the nozzle at the other end and there is a small tap with which the flow of the liquid can be regulated. You can also use a rectal implant tube ~ this is a small tube 14" long ~ which attaches to the end of the rectal nozzle, i.e. it lengthens the overall length of the tube by 14". This either provides you with a more convenient length or it will enable you to take a higher enema, i.e. the rectal implant tube can be carefully inserted further. We would advise that you consult a complementary therapist and/or follow their advice and instruction in this respect.

How to take an enema

You will need the following:

  • A convenient hook, or ledge (for a bucket-type enema kit)
  • An enema kit
  • 2 pints of enema liquid (various types are listed below). Whatever the contents, the liquid should be room temperature. Too warm, and it would be uncomfortable ~ too cold, and it would be hard to retain.

You will find your enema a simple and pleasant experience if you organise yourself well, set aside a relaxed half an hour and provide yourself with something to do when you are retaining the enema (music, book, etc). Many people like to take their enema while they are soaking in a warm bath. Others prefer to do it on a rug on the bathroom floor, so that they can assume yoga postures like the shoulder stand while retaining the liquid. Others choose to use a slant board or inversion table, allowing gravity to help in retention. Since we are all different, our advice would be to experiment and find out what works best for you. What follows must only be taken as a guide. If you have been advised by a practitioner ~ follow their instructions!

When you are ready:
1. Lubricate the enema nozzle (Speculum Ointment, Vaseline, chickweed or almond oil are some examples of what can be used for this purpose)
2. Lie on your back or on your right side
3. Gently insert the nozzle into the rectum, until it is firmly in place
4. Gently turn the little tap to allow the liquid to flow through the tube (you can control the level of flow by turning the tap)
5. Don't expect too much of yourself the first time, either in terms of the amount of liquid retained or the retention time (after a number of enemas, your body will get used to retaining more liquid for longer)
6. Aim to retain about 2 pints for at least 10 minutes at the outset (your practitioner may have already advised you)
7. Sometimes the urge to release cannot be ignored, and it is wise to let it go and begin again. As the bowel condition improves, it will be easier to accept and retain more liquid with a minimum of discomfort. The colon is a very large eliminative organ and is arranged internally like three sides of a large square. The aim is to let the enema liquid go up the descending colon positioned down our left hand side, along the transverse colon positioned from left to right under our stomachs and into the ascending colon which goes down our right hand side. It will help to gently massage the colon in a clockwise motion and to change positions.

Types of enema
Warm water enema: This will effectively cleanse the rectum and release toxins that may be causing headaches and flatulence. Its effects are superficial, but can be relied on whenever any of the other enema fluids are not readily available.

Herbal enemas: Make a strong infusion of herbal teas or a decoction of roots and bark, strain and cool. Use 2 teaspoons of herb per pint of water, 4 tsp for each quart. This may be made up in advance, but used preferably within 24 hours, though certain herbs keep up to 72 hours. However, once souring and scum appears, throw it away. It should be kept in a glass container in a fridge or cool place. Make herbal infusions or decoctions in stainless steel or enamelled pots only. For fuller details of all these and other formulae read the book Herbs of Grace by Farida Sharan. The colon is very absorptive and very sensitive, so ensure the water used is distilled or from a known pure source.

Catnip is mildly nervine, calming, soothing and relaxing. It effectively brings down fevers, and is excellent for use with children. Chamomile is excellent for recuperative periods after illness or a healing crisis.

Detoxifying Enema: make a decoction of yellow dock and burdock roots. Then add red clover and red raspberry infusions. Stimulates the liver to dump bile, thereby relieving stress and pain in a healing crisis.

Slippery Elm is a mucilagenous, soothing, softening and nourishing enema. Excellent to give if the patient is having trouble eating or retaining food, as the bowel absorbs the nutrients.

Sage is warming and purifying.

Garlic injection: profoundly purifying, an excellent aid in the treatment of worms. Liquidise 4 cloves in 1 pint of warm water and strain.

Astringent: witch hazel, bayberry, or white oak bark, used to help stop diarrhoea and dysentery.

Flaxseed: relieves inflammation, pain and bleeding (more effective if you add 2 tsp. liquid chlorophyll). Also aids healing process.

Wheatgrass implant: inject pure chlorophyll juice of Wheatgrass, to positively restore the bowel and blood stream. Wheatgrass is excellent for chronic diseases. Can be mixed with rejuvelac (water from soaking wheat). The enema bulb syringes are ideal for this.

Coffee Enema: The coffee enema is widely publicised these days as a part of cancer therapy and chronic care naturopathy. It is excellent to relieve healing crisis pain and discomfort, to stimulate the liver to dump bile by absorption of the coffee into the haemorrhoidal veins and the portal vein, and to encourage deep cleansing of the colon by stimulating peristaltic activity. It is a regular part of the Gerson Therapy regime and the Kelly cancer programme. The coffee enema is prepared by putting 3 tbsp. of drip ground coffee into 1 quart of distilled water that has just been brought to the boil. Continue on the boil for 3 minutes and then simmer on very low heat for 20 minutes. Cool. Strain and inject while at body temperature. Retain 10-15 minutes. This can be done every morning when on a detox programme or fast, and every hour during an acute healing crisis. The bowels continue to operate independently even when taking the coffee enema regularly and start functioning easily on their own after the coffee enema is discontinued. The coffee enema is recommended after a lymph massage to cleanse the colon of the lymph that has drained into the bowel, but not before sleep as it is too stimulating. Some herbal substitutes for the coffee enema are: Red Clover, Yellow Dock root, Burdock and Red Raspberry.

Spirulina enema: The use of spirulina plankton enemas, together with fasting and purification programmes, is an excellent way to cleanse the colon and purify the blood stream as quickly as possible. Spirulina has the unique advantage of supplying strength and power through the absorption of the plankton into the bowel wall, as well as cleansing at the same time by softening the impacted faecal matter and stimulating peristalsis. The spirulina enema can be made as follows:

  • Heat a blender full of distilled water to body temperature
  • Mix 2 tsp. spirulina powder with half a cup of cold water till you make a smooth paste.
  • Add 2 tsp. Glycerine (from a chemist) and stir together.
  • Add this loose paste to a blender half full of the warm water and mix at slow speed. You can also use a whisk.
  • Add the remaining distilled water slowly, to fill the blender.
  • Fill the enema bag straight away and use quickly.

This method will wash out the lower and upper bowel and encourage a complete peristaltic downward action. The plankton is absorbed into the bowel wall, helping it to soften, loosen and dilute the bowel contents. Inject the mixture a little at a time while lying on your right side. Move backwards and forwards from left to right and massage the bowel area. The glycerine helps to emulsify the mixture, soften the impacted faeces and lubricate the colon wall. Take the enema the first night of any fast and for the next 2 nights. While you continue the fast, take one every other day and after the fast take once a month on a regular basis for effective bowel maintenance.
