Fact Sheet 8 : Air Purification
Wholistic Research Co.
Summary:

Ø Many of us live and/or work in environments where the levels of negative ions are reduced because of high levels of pollution ~ electronic & particulate.
These environments are characterised by feeling \"dead\" or flat.

Ø The opposite is an atmosphere where one feels alive, energised, a sense of wellness, the sort of feeling you get when you stand beside a waterfall.
In these environments, there is a high level of natural negative ions.

We are informed with increasing frequency how our influence on the planet is becoming harmful and causing imbalances in the ecosystem, and in many cases may be harmful to us. The signs are often ignored or rationalised, building up the problems for future decades and generations. The quality of the air we breathe is one such problem area. We can all remember a situation where we have gone out for a \"breath of fresh air\" to relieve us from the stuffiness of an overheated or overcrowded room. Why does an air-conditioned atmosphere feel \"dead\"? Why does mountain or sea air make us feel so good and even promote healing? Why does the weather affect our mood? One answer lies in the electrical state of the air ~ in its ionisation. And the solution - other than living by the sea or in the mountains = can lie in an air ioniser.

One of the first studies was undertaken by Einstein and Harbicht in 1910: they studied why the mountain air of Davos was renowned for its health giving properties. They decided it was air electricity. Harbicht continued the research and the first air ionisers were built. It would seem that air ionisation - and in particular negative air ionisation - plays an important role in the natural economy.

Negative ions are one of nature\'s natural sweepers. They aid in the destruction of airborne bacteria by oxidative action and they clear dust, pollen, smoke & small particles from the atmosphere. In the body, negative ions increase our capacity to take up oxygen and enhance the ability of the respiratory tract to deal with airborne particles - allergens, dust, smoke etc. Histamine, which triggers hay fever, is reduced in level by negative ions that also have a beneficial effect on anyone suffering from bronchial complaints.

Empirical research has also shown that sufferers of insomnia, migraine, emphysema, eczema, headaches, tiredness, depression and a general feeling of malaise are often by an artificially induced increase in the level of negative ions. Hospital burns units, especially in the USA use negative ion generators in close proximity to the burnt area and report a widespread increase in the speed and quality of healing. Plants and animals also grow better in an environment charged with negative ions. In fact plants are one of the most prolific sources of negative ions. They conduct the negative electrical charge of the earth up into the air and \"eject\" it from the tips of their leaves.

Many of us live in environments devoid or at least depleted of negative ions. Pollution from car exhausts, air conditioning, cigarette smoking, overcrowding, static-producing man-made fibres in carpets, clothes and curtains all contribute to the increase in positive ions. Offices equipped with negative air ionisation units report that their employees are less likely to get colds, report less absenteeism and are generally more alert and cheerful. Submarines & spacecraft scientists have recommended the use of negative air ionisers in such closed and artificial environments.

Negative ions are normal air molecules with an extra electron. They occur naturally in the environment, particularly in the mountains, after thunderstorms, by waterfalls and at the seaside. They contribute to the sense of well being felt at such places. By contrast, positive air ions induce a sense of lethargy, anxiety and restlessness. They tend to predominate in stale, polluted and smoky air, in cities, in indoor air, in the heavy atmosphere before thunderstorms etc. Further, dirt, dust, synthetic materials, TVs, VDUs, electronic equipment and even central heating radiators and other large expanses of metal also tend to reduce the number of negative ions in the atmosphere.

Air ionisers have been available for over 20 years and there is no doubt that they work. In some cases, results have been life-changing. The experience of hundreds of thousands of users has also been supported by clinical trials. An air ioniser helps to redress the balance. A high concentration of negative ions has also proved of great value in alleviating breathing difficulties and in clearing sinus congestion. Sufferers from colds, flu, catarrh, sinusitis, rhinitis, bronchitis, asthma, hay fever and similar complaints have all commonly reported benefits.

Additionally, air ionisers have proven helpful in alleviating stress, tension and headaches (including migraines), in promoting sound, restful sleep and in fostering alertness and concentration. They help create a healthy environment in the home & office and, in an atmosphere often charged with stress and pollution,in your car. Ionisers also help remove odours and small particles from the air, such as pollen & dust. All ionisers do this, but those with additional fans and filters are more efficient.

Choosing an air ioniser

First you have to decide whether you want the facility of cleaning the air of all small particles and odours. If so you need an ioniser with a fan and a multi-stage filter. Then choose an ioniser (with or without a fan) according to the size of the room or space to be ionised. It is worth noting that since you cannot over-ionise a room, there is no harm having a powerful ioniser in a small room.

Ionisers are available for the home, office, workshop and factory.

There are very simple air systems that work in a local area and these have been proven to be useful in many domestic and office situations. At the other end of the scale is the \"whole house\" air purification system (the Sunpure), which cleans air to hospital standards and is probably the best system available anywhere. It is particularly effective in dealing with asthma and airborn allergens.
