Colonic Hydrotherapy
by Andrea Maunders, MCIA, MBANT
Colonic Hydrotherapy is a thorough, gentle and safe internal bath of the large intestine by a qualified therapist. It involves the introduction of warm, filtered water through the rectum into the colon. Therapists also include dietary, herbal and supplementary recommendations.

Colonic Hydrotherapy is not habit forming, nor does it disturb the electrolyte balance. Pressures used are half that of barium enemas, so it is very safe. Conditions treated are; constipation, diarrhoea, colitis, spastic colon, diverticulitis, liver sluggishness, halitosis, headaches, flatulence, haemorrhoids, skin problems such as acne, eczema and psoriasis, abdominal bloating, asthma, allergies, fatigue and many 'psychological' states such as depression and lethargy. Some complex conditions such as Chron's disease, myalgic encephalomyelitis (ME) and intestinal candida are also helped by the resultant detoxifying effect of Colonic Hydrotherapy.

Of all the organs of the body, the colon is the largest perpetrator of disease. It is said to be the initiator of 80% of all critical illnesses. Many people are permanently constipated and they know no different. They take headaches, lethargy and general depletion as part of normal life. They simply do not remember what it is like to have a healthy colon and a feeling of well being.

Ideally we should eliminate after every meal, two or three times a day. Most people consider themselves in good working order if they have one bowel movement a day and many more do not even acheive that amount with any regularity. When the colon is clean and healthy we experience a feeling of well being. In effect. the colon is the sewage system of the body and like any rubbish bin it is susceptible to stagnation and the formation of decay and poisonous substances. Therefore, it needs special care to keep the colon free from putrefaction. When this does not happen, the decay is not limited to the site of origin. It spreads rapidly to other organs, causing autointoxication or self-poisoning.

This poisoning affects all of the body's tissues and can take many forms. If the poisoning is in the brain and nervous system it makes us depressed and irritable. If in the heart, we become weak and lack energy. If in the lungs it can make us breathless and cause halitosis. If in the stomach and small intestine the toxins cause bloating. When these toxins are found in the blood and lymph system we have a sallow, spotty and unclean looking skin and if they collect in the glands we feel tired, lacking enthusiasm and sex drive and look old beyond our years.

Colonic Hydrotherapy, or Colonic Irrigation cannot be compared to an enema; it functions in a different manner. Enemas only empty the lower twelve inches of the five and a half foot colon. A colonic reaches the entire length of the colon to the ileo-caecal valve. The process is painless and highly effective. The action of the water flowing in and being very gently drawn out through a very mild vacuum encourages the colon to function on its own. A number of treatments are recommended in order to thoroughly clean the bowel and afterwards a maintenance programme is normally suggested, much like going to the dentist for a check up. Colonic Hydrotherapy is a common-sense part of a lifestyle that is concerned about prevention of illness.
