Book Review: Thinking Like a Mountain, by Robert Bateman
by John Morley, MBAcC, FGNI,M.Soc.Biol.Med., MMAA
Aldo Leopald first coined the phrase "thinking like a mountain" more than fifty years ago, and it resonates more loudly with every passing year as the need for us to make choices about what is best for our children and grandchildren grows more and more pressing. When will we change our way of thinking so that we make our plans and take our decisions from the point of view of the planet, rather than the point of view of instant gratification? Bateman shows us that the solution to our problems are all around us, if only we observe closely and listen carefully. They won't come easy or cheap or pain-free, but upon their successful application depends the survival of all species, including our own.

"Thinking Like a Mountain" includes great chapters on Small is Beautiful's 25th anniversary, Unholy Alliances, Natural Capitalism, Nigerian Public Transit, The Ecology of Cities, and on the new variety of human being "Homo Sapiens Teenager Consumerensis", created over the last 45 years by pioneering TV advertisers who soon discovered that they could train teenagers to have special needs: special foods, special beverages, special clothing, special music, special movies. For the first time in the history of humanity, the most vital, active years of a person's growing life are dedicated to one major goal: self-indulgence, encouraged by over-exposure to TV, now watched for more hours per week than are spent in school. Great discussion of the root problems in all these and more areas.
