Book Review: Natural Capitalism: Creating the Next Industrial Revolution
by John Morley, MBAcC, FGNI, M.Soc.Biol.Med, MMAA
Following on from Growing a Business (1991) and The Ecology of Commerce (1995) by Paul Hawken, a founding member of the Findhorn Community, this title addresses the madness of our economic system, which only includes transactions that cause money to change hands to be included in a country's economic "product". The value of "natural capital", the sum total of the natural resources and biological support systems of the planet is not included. This way of thinking places a positive value on items that cause ecological damage.

Hawken et al argue that, despite this, the shift is already under way. Even some of the world's largest companies are moving from trying to save money by using fewer people to using resources ~ raw material and energy ~ more efficiently. They argue that the sooner we change our thinking as a society and value the goods of nature, treat them as precious capital worth preserving, the sooner will natural capitalism displace old-style capitalism.

This is a weighty book in both senses. Essential reading if you have or may have grandchildren who one day may ask you what you were doing during the crises at the beginning of the century.
