Good News : 60 years teaching Keep Fit and Going Strong Betty Morley |
 |
(Ed:Betty has been a Keep Fit Teacher since 1942. She is a qualified teacher of the Keep Fit Association (K.F.A.). Her first training was with the Central Council of Physical Recreation (C.C.P.R.))
This year I have been teaching Keep Fit for 60 years and I still love it!
You will realise that we began long before the fashion for doing aerobics. As the motto of the KFA (Keep Fit Association) is "Fitness through Movement, Exercise and Dance", we are more gentle and so anyone of any age can join in a class and take part. I have several ladies in their 80s in my active classes.
The KFA have a specialist section called "Youth Moves" for very young children and older children. They learn through fun and creative movement. Then we have the adult section which teaches - as the motto says - MOVEMENT, EXERCISE and DANCE. At the end of each lesson we have worked every muscle and every joint - gently through its natural range of movement. - plus the sheer joy of "moving".
The 50+ classes can mean any age above 50 and they vary according to the ability of class members, from very active to more gentle.
Some teachers have had extra training to teach the FRAIL ELDERLY - which I do - and also the disabled, which I really enjoy teaching.
I have been very healthy all my life and still have plenty of vitality for keeping active. I am involved in many activities and I am usually out enjoying myself. I am sure that my continual Keep Fit has a lot to do with this, together with trying to eat a healthy diet. I also think it is important to keep a positive attitude towards life. Remember that old age has nothing to do with the date on your Birth Certificate, it is an attitude of mind.
Our classes are also FUN and we certainly teach the importance of Smiling and Laughing to help the body physically as well as mentally.
We have a happy social side in our classes which is particularly good for older people, and we make lasting friendships. However, if anyone does not wish to attend a class, here are a few simple exercises to do at home. Remember that the human body needs exercise at ALL ages to keep all the body parts working properly. Of course, if you have any medical problems or are elderly and have never exercised before, - check with your doctor first.
----------------
Put some of your favourite music on to work to - fairly slow.
Begin stepping and pointing your toes, alternate feet 10 times - then sideways. Point heels forwards 10 times, then heel/toe each foot.
Do each of the following 10 times also :
Lift alternate knees up, tapping knees with opposite hand.
"March" a few times:
step and kick left leg across to the right, then right leg across to the left.
Feet apart, swing arms down - back and forward to waist height and back, and repeat.
Lift shoulders up to ears fairly slowly and PRESS down again (do not drop heavily). One shoulder at a time and then both together.
Right hand on right shoulder, swing the elbow forwards and backwards. Repeat with the left arm.
Now with the hand again on the shoulder, lift the elbow out sideways up and down.
That is just a few basics for starters.
Good Luck, Good Health and Keep Fit
