Ear Acupuncture
by John Morley, MBAcC, MMAA, MSocBiol Med
The ear functions as a tiny representation of the body in the same way that the foot does in reflexology. If you imagine the ear to be the shape of a baby upside down in the foetal position then the anatomy of the ear corresponds roughly to the anatomy of the body, in the way that the points are mapped out. Ear acupuncture, or auricular acupuncture as it is also called, has been used in China since before 500 B.C. but has become more known in the west through the work of the french doctor, Paul Nogier.

Any disharmony within the body is reflected in the ear as a change in electrical sensitivity in one or more points. There may also be inflammation, dry skin, white or grey nodules or scarring. The sensitivity can be detected by a special point locator or by palpation with the blunt end of an acupuncture needle.

By using very small acupuncture needles, or a small electric stimulator, the acupuncturist can stimulate the energy at these points and cause changes within the body so that the disharmony is resolved.
Sometimes small plasters with very small magnetised steel balls, or seeds, are left in place over certain points to keep the treatment going or to provide a the patient with the ability to continue the treatment themselves by stimulating these areas.

As well as balancing the body's energies, very definite chemical changes occur in brain and blood chemistry. This is particularly relevant when treating addictions.
