From your own personal internal environment you produce many substances during all of the biochemical activity in your body. These include food residues, histamines, adrenalin and other hormomes, mucous, enzymes, neurotransmitters such as dopamine and serotonin, uric acid and several other chemicals. Some of these, if they are in short supply, can put the body under stress and lead to malfunction and disease. Some of them, if they remain in the body too long, will also put the body under stress and lead to malfunction and disease.
From the external environment there are many things that are potentially stressful if they are taken into the body : chemicals of all sorts, such as dyes, solvents, food preservatives, petroleum products, pesticides and drugs; also the heavy metals ~ mercury, lead and cadmium, germanium, aluminium, samarium, etc; and invisible things that can produce debilitating effects when they influence us ~ ionising radiation, certain electromagnetic fields and geopathic disturbances.
All of these things can directly prevent the body from functioning normally, or they can indirectly compromise the body's ability to adjust and regulate itself when it is put under extra stress or extra demand from other sources. In either case this leads to an organ or system not being able to function properly, and this will lead to external symptoms that are felt in one way or another.
There is another area of internal stress that can have a big impact on the function of the body: Toxic Residues from previous health challenges. You may have noticed, when you are under lots of stress or when you are run down or very tired, that tell-tale symptoms appear that originally appeared when you were ill or at some time in the past and you can't remember when the first appearance was. A certain shoulder pain, a certain backache, a certain feeling in the head or in the guts, a twitch, a certain itch, a certain rash or sore throat, constipation for a few hours, and many other possibilities for this kind of symptom. You may not be able to link it exactly to a previous health challenge but be able to note that a certain symptom or group of symptoms regularly appears when you are "under the weather."
Toxic residues (from personal history) include unresolved previous illnesses that are still having an impact on vitality and are thus seen as a toxic burden. For example, many children have unresolved mumps, measles, rubella and chickenpox even though they appeared to overcome the original infection, and it is possible to carry these toxic burdens into adulthood. The problem is not usually the original virus but the toxic metabolites of the virus that are not eliminated at the end of the original infection. Residual effects of adult viral infections can also be implicated in fatigue and/or digestive syndromes that develop after the original infection is over.
Toxic residues also include negative vaccination effects: smallpox, diphtheria, polio, whooping cough, measles, mumps, rubella, tetanus, TB, plus all of the tropical diseases that many children and adults are vaccinated against. About 70% of the European population are carrying one or more vaccination stresses, if my patients are typical. A lot of these vaccination stresses are inconsequential but some have a big impact and are a contributing causal factor or a blocking factor to normal recovery in many "hard-to-explain" conditions.
Toxic Residues also includes
a) the effects of chronic sinus, tonsil, teeth and appendix problems;
b) the effects of the inappropriate use of antibiotics and the incorrect (suppressive) treatment of influenza, leucorrhea and other discharges;
c) the effects of the destruction of the friendly bacteria in the human gut and the maldistribution of normal bacteria;
d) the residual effects of former parasite infestations and/or of current ones;
e) the effects of infections transferred from animals;
f) chronic and acute skin problems
g) the effects of the many, many new chemical toxins that have been on the increase in our environment for many years now, especially the ones that the Liver can not detoxify.
If you are working with a practitioner whose approach is non-suppressive (i.e not based solely on removing the symptoms but on finding and addressing the real causes) it is likely to be helpful to clear these toxic residues, because it will be improving your own healing powers and taking the demand off your liver's detoxification function, thus freeing your immune system to deal with the real causes of illness.
Many Toxic Residues have been present for a long time and are very well entrenched. This can be particularly true of factors related to previous viral infections and ones that link to childhood. The seeds may, for example, have been sown when someone had recurrent sore throats and/or tonsillitis as a child, or if there is a long-standing sinus history.
Nearly all chronic illness, which to most Complementary Practitioners means anything that is of more than a few weeks duration and involves the whole body rather than a local reaction, includes at least one Toxic Residue factor.
The modern techniques of Biological Medicine and Homotoxicology, can be very helpful in detecting and clearing entrenched Toxic Residues that do not respond to first stage naturopathic approaches.
